EXPLORING: “PURSUIT OF PROVERBS 31” BY: AMY BAYLISS

I have to say that I started out somewhat familiar with the author Amy Bayliss, having taken part in a video conference with her and others from the “A Woman Inspired” website.  I knew she was going to speak straight from the heart and honestly, and that in my opinion is Amy’s forte.  She didn’t let me down with this book “Pursuit of Proverbs 31”.

This book is a good read for all women but I would recommend it particularly for those ladies who are stuck in the “perfectionist” mindset that they have to be just like the Proverbs 31 Woman.  This is not a book on how to be perfect.  This is not a book of lists on what to do to accomplish everything that the Proverbs 31 woman did.  Amy actually dispels the myth that we all have come to believe about who this woman really is.

As Christian women, we all want to be the perfect Mother, Wife, Daughter and Friend.  We all want to have that fresh relationship with God.  We often act like mice on a wheel running endlessly after an ideal.  And when we don’t measure up, we beat ourselves down and wonder how she (the Proverbs 31 woman) did it all.  This book takes the form of a bible study based on Proverbs 31 and takes you on a truth-seeking journey through other scriptures as well.

Amy learned the hard way, as she says in her book, and lucky for us we get to learn from her mistakes.  She talks in a candid way about her struggles with being married to a man who was not a believer, as well as dealing with feeling like a bad Mom when she separated herself emotionally from her son who had been in an accident.  Her honesty was a breath of fresh air to me as she describes how God freed her from the shackles of being a perfectionist people pleaser.  Along with the lessons she has learned on the way she shares some money-saving tips, marriage advice and ideas on kids and discipline that I’d never thought of before.  She also reminds you not to forget about yourself along the way as Mothers often do and boy did I need to hear that one!

Overall, this book was a fantastic read and a great way to brush up on some scripture memorization.  I recommend turning your cell phone off and reading a chapter or two every morning along with your cup of coffee or beverage of choice.  Give this book a try to get off the endless wheel of who you think you should be and become who God thinks you should be!
